How to Create a Long-Form Novel with AI

Deep Craft develops a complete long-form draft — sometimes exceeding 100,000 words — from a single creative setup. Here's how to prepare for it and what to do once it finishes.

Where AI Create keeps you inside the loop one decision at a time, Deep Craft takes a creative setup and develops it into a finished long-form draft in one continuous process. It trades moment-to-moment control for speed — which means the setup work you do before starting matters more than it does for a short scene.

The basic flow

  1. Define Genre and Theme.
  2. Choose an AI Master or My Writing Style — see How to Make AI Write in Your Own Voice if you want the draft in your own prose.
  3. Select the desired length.
  4. Start Deep Craft and allow the process to complete.
  5. Open the finished story and review the full text.
  6. Use the editing tools to revise the result.
  7. Download available text, ebook, or audio formats according to your plan.

Deep Craft can also generate a cover as part of the process, so you finish with a complete package rather than just raw text.

Before starting a long draft

Long-form generation amplifies both good and weak setup decisions — a vague premise doesn't stay vague for one scene, it stays vague for a hundred thousand words. Before you start Deep Craft, get clear on:

  • Whose story this is — a single clear protagonist, not a rotating ensemble with no center.
  • What changes for the protagonist by the end — the actual arc, not just an ending event.
  • What opposition sustains the middle — the thing preventing an easy resolution for most of the book.
  • What cannot be easily undone — the irreversible choices that give the plot weight.
  • The desired tone and audience.
  • Any ending conditions that matter to you — tragic, redemptive, ambiguous, and so on.

This is the same discipline behind a strong quick-start theme, just scaled up: a specific protagonist, a desire, a constraint, and a source of pressure that can sustain an entire novel instead of one scene.

After generation: review in passes

Treat the result as a complete developmental draft, not an untouchable final manuscript. Reviewing everything at once tends to miss problems; reviewing in focused passes catches more:

  1. Structure — causality, escalation, turning points, and the ending.
  2. Character — desire, contradiction, agency, and change.
  3. Continuity — timeline, setting rules, names, and factual consistency.
  4. Scene craft — objectives, conflict, subtext, and reversals.
  5. Prose — voice, rhythm, specificity, repetition, and clarity. Run representative passages through Human Score at this stage.

Match the fix to the level where the problem lives. A structural problem usually needs a new direction or a branch from an earlier point — not a sentence-level rewrite. A prose-level problem, on the other hand, may only need Manual Editing on the affected passage.

Branching instead of restarting

If a passage in a long draft goes in the wrong direction, you rarely need to regenerate the whole novel. Branch from the point where the problem started, test an alternative, and keep whichever version produces stronger consequences for the protagonist. This preserves the parts of the draft that already work while you fix the parts that don't.

Deep Craft vs. AI Create

Use Deep Craft when your setup is already strong and you want a complete draft to revise. Use AI Create when you're still discovering the story, or when a scene needs your judgment in the moment rather than after the fact. Many authors combine both: AI Create to find the voice and opening, Deep Craft to develop the rest once the setup is proven.
